So do we now have the "which 'stop the sill buildroot debates' patch is
better" debate?

This looks good to me, though I wonder if later Spot's mkdtmp couldn't
be brought in as well. Like maybe by default the buildroot is a tmpdir,
and you can override that, if necessary.
