<p>Imagine the the following usage:</p>
<pre><code>for source in %{sources}
do
    echo ${source}
done
</code></pre>
<p>If there are spaces either in the file name or somewhere within the upper directory names, the command inside the loop will be executed for each part of the name.<br>
Therefore %{sources} and likewise %{patches} should expand into a list of values where each value is contained in single quotes.</p>
<p>I noticed that the situation when a file name contains a single quote is already handled by surrounding the file name in quotes and escaping the inner quote.</p>
