Also be (a)ware that rpm-4.4.2 does not scale very well wrt large number 
of files. People have experienced OOM problems especially when removing 
or updating packages with huge number of files in them. These problems 
got fixed in more recent versions but the changes are quite big an 
though have not been back ported. Splitting things up into several 
packages that can be installed and updated in separate transactions may 
probably be used as work around.
