Hey Panu,
Hahah..... yeah. How little known this really is. Spot (Redhat) did it
with rpm -V `rpm -qa kernel*`. I would have done it differently again.
The question then is:
a. As you said, is this explained properly.
b. Is the end-user usage scenario, different from what is happening now.
That is why I suggested a simplified form. If it at least knew that the
kernel rpm, is a placeholder. It has to query the rpm database anyway.
And yes, I am well aware that, from a traditional point of view
depsolving was done by the package installers, however rpm does do
dependency checking.
So why not, detect a place holder package and then verify those
packages, that make up the "unit" as such. And make the human interface
for that more intuitive(simplified).
Apart from the fact, as I pointed out, at the moment it is misleading.
Anyone new to Linux and RPM, will be baffled, as older instructions
still found on the internet, ask people to do rpm -V package name.
No return output, means everything is unchanged.
At least rpm -ql kernel returns:

Thank you all. I hope a better solution can be found for this issue.

Tristan
