Yes I know there's a school of packaging that uses the double-underscore macros for everything they can. That doesn't mean it's how those macros ever were meant to be used, the double underscore is a pretty strong hint that these are *rpm private*.

Fedora folks came up with a pretty good summary: in specs, double-underscore macros should only be used for *setting* things (ie override behavior), user-oriented macros for *getting* information should have no underscores.
