Sure it does, I use it *all the time*.

But read again the long list of caveats I pointed out: it only works given the thing inside the root is of compatible version. For example, if you now try to access a Fedora rawhide installation from a host with rpm 4.15, you'll see an empty database returned as 4.15 doesn't know anything about sqlite db and so just goes to initialize an empty db there instead.

You might be seeing that lazy database initialization in action, it is indeed quite confusing (and broken) behavior.
