That, and being specific to a crypto backend which is neither the current or future default are quite show-stoppers to me.

A reasonable compromise could be just outputing signature parameters on failure (rpmPubkeyNew() time basically), but that runs into the issue of error reporting. OTOH, I'm not sure an rpmlog() call in rpmPubkeyNew() would be any worse than having it in the low-level PGP code.
