Many more questions than I have answers for... (thanks for the thoughtful feedback!)

I'm quite torn on changing the default behavior, as of course there are those (users and scripts) that expect those exact semantics. And OTOH there's a long history of confused users, and SUSE seems to have had their share as your rpm has (or at least had) a patch to elaborate on --whatrequires man page :grin:
