It's a valid point and something I wondered about, too. The purpose of the redirect is to not break existing links out there (and/or users' bookmarks). That said, someone might just rely on this index page (and not on the actual URL of the given document), so in a way, these index links *are* in fact something that should be preserved for "backward compatibility", too.

So I agree, I'll keep it here.
