Rewrote quite substantially, to make it clearer and easier to incorporate the suggestions from above. Plus added some more missing bits of info here and there, including a better SYNOPSIS.

I kept the printf reference around, it should be easier to get an idea what this whole thing is about, which is, template strings for printing text.
