Okay, glad you have a solution for now. 

Looking at Fedora specs, I've this feeling that usages of %{buildsubdir} tend to be symptoms of something else missing, rather than being particularly important in itself. One of them being that per-build guaranteed directory, another one perhaps not having the assembled %{_builddir}/%{?buildsubdir} readily available through the environment (or a macro). Which seems kinda weird too.
