Damn, thought I was commenting here on the PR but it was the ticket instead, copying here as this was the intended original destination:

Okay, having second thoughts after seeing it written out. The main motivation here came from describing this in the man page, but this is an artificial restriction, and those rarely make sense.

Let's just leave it as it is, and I'll fix the man page instead. Sorry for the false trail. At least it wasn't a big chunk of code...

BTW part of "the issue" was probably slightly misreading the code in question: the "no file name" case would be better handled with poptStuffArgs() because then it doesn't need to be processed separately.
