Okay, https://dictionary.cambridge.org/dictionary/english/either says it also has the "both" meaning, and uses a very similar example on that: "Unfortunately I was sitting at the table with smokers on either side of me."

The scdoc text is ambiguous in a way the above example is not, but judging how they do have empty lines around all their own manuals, they do mean "both sides" here.
