We're a bit out-of-sync in the comments here :laughing: Maybe you're right, after all. So how about
1. Normal operation (no `--root` override) uses NSS
2. Custom `--root` operation uses file lookup (no option to override)
3. User can enforce file lookup (by defining `%_passwd_path` and/or `%_group_path`, which will be undefined in stock configuration)
